Imphal, July 29: Opposition MLA O Joy Singh has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the institution of a probe committee headed by a Commissioner to investigate the attack on the Chief Minister's convoy on July 27 at Wangjing.

During a brief discussion during the evening session of the Assembly today, Joy maintained before the House that the Commissioner may have reservation to summon or quiz higher ranked State Government officials and insisted on a probe committee to be headed by no less than a Judge of High Court.

Acknowledging Joy's contention, Chief Minister O Ibobi stated that suggestions and opinions of all concerned, especially the Opposition members, would be sought and entertained if the current investigation committee is found unsatisfactory.

It would take at least a fortnight to complete the probe, said Ibobi adding 'Let us see the report first'.

On this the MLA suggested on shortening the probe period so that the inquiry report could be tabled during the current session.

Members of both the Opposition and ruling bench condemned the attack in the strongest term and expressed solidarity with families of the two security personnel killed in the attack.

During the discussion, the CM stated that the incident could have been foiled if security personnel on ROP duty had checked and verified the identities of the Tata Sumo occupants from where the shots were fired.

The vehicle was reported to have been parked at the same place since morning of attack day.

Joining the discussion MLA Dr Nimaichand Luwang attributed security negligence and poor intelligence network for the dreaded attack while highlighting that even if the CM with adequate security detailment could be targeted by militants in broad daylight in crowded area then Ministers/MLAs lives are under serious threat.
