Imphal, April 24: Unidentified gunmen gunned down former State DGP Lairenjam Jugeshwor at Mayai Koibi Chabungbam Leikai under Lamphel Police Station this evening at around 6.40.According to reports, the former DGP had gone out of his house on a Maruti Zen (MN-1A/5115) this evening at around 6.30 on the pretext of playing badminton at the Manipur Badminton Hall located inside the DM College campus.

On his way he had even dropped into the residence of one of his friend identified as Chabungbam Ibopishak at Chabungbam Leikai a retired Chief Engineer of the Electricity Department.

Jugeshwar later drove out of Ibopishak's residence as he refused to accompany him.

Well armed men who had been laying in wait attacked Jugeshwar a few yards away from Ibopishak's residence with sophisticated weapons from the right side of the car leaving the former DGP in a pool of blood.

The victim who received four bullets on the chest was immediately rushed to RIMS but failed to respond to medical treatment and passed away a short while later, added the source.

Meanwhile, DIG Range I Anish Dayal has informed that all the escapes routes have been sealed and raids are being conducted at suspected areas to nab the killers.

Red alert has also been sounded and frisking intensified in the city following the killing, added the DIG.

Meanwhile, KYKL has claimed responsibility for the killing of the former police officer.

In a statement, deputy secretary publicity and research of the KYKL Apabi Mangang informed that the killing was carried out by a team of Special Operation Team as Jugeshwor had not only openly campaigned for the BJP violating the diktats of the party but was also involved in activities against the KYKL.

Stating that L Jugeshwor and Th Chaoba are very close relatives, Apabi asserted that Jugeshwor is a hardened criminal who misused his official position while smuggling drugs along with Chaoba.

He also stated that all the BJP leaders would meet the same fate of Jugeshwor if they do not follow the diktats of the party and added that its cadres will not compromise but uproot anyone who works against the party.

The statement also claimed responsibility for shooting Nongkokpam Sarat (45) on the right calf last night at Konthoujam Makha Leikai under Patsoi police station.

An alleged BJP worker Sarat' from Konthoujam Lairembi was shot at around 11 and is presently undergoing treatment at RIMS.

In separate incident, a CRPF jawan was killed and seven others seriously injured when the vehicle they were travelling met with an accident at Ngamju village under Senapati dist last night at around 7.30 while going on election duty, said sources.

The victim has been identified as one T Praveen of E/company-44 th Bn CRPF.
