Repoll in 48 booths peaceful

Imphal, February 24: Repoll was held in 48 polling booths during the first phase in the hill constituencies today amidst tight security.

In the second phase slated for tomorrow, repoll will be held across 25 booths.

Even though the repoll passed off peacefully by and large, unidentified gunmen opened fire at polling station 42/1 Tolen polling station in Tengnoupal AC today at about 8.30 am.

Security personnel deployed at the station also returned fire.

There is, however, no report of any casualty on either side.

Confusion reigned following the shooting and some ballot papers were found missing later.

Voting was stalled for about 2 hours and election process resumed only after additional security personnel were rushed to the station and the missing polling material were replaced.

At polling station 42/29 in Tengnoupal AC polling stopped at 10 am.

The total number of voters listed here is 552.There is no report of any untoward incident in the three polling stations at Phungyar AC in Ukhrul district where repoll was ordered.

T Phungzathang Tonsing has submitted a complaint to the Returning Officer of Churachandpur district demanding repoll in polling stations 58/25, 58/26 and 58/27.In the complaint submitted to the RO, Phungzathang said that 10 of his polling agents have been abducted and their whereabouts are still unknown.

Further their signatures were forged on Agent forms by his political rival, the INC candidate contended.

Repoll has been ordered again in polling station 48/15, Sajouba UJB School (right wing), Mao AC on February 26 as there were some disturbances during the repoll held today.

To facilitate smooth repoll, the Governor has ordered that all Government offices and educational institutions located under 52/13 Thengjang, 52/19 Lasan and 52/46 polling stations in Tamei.

AC should remain closed on February 25.Likewise Government offices and educational establishments under 55/ 8 Sibapurikhal, 55/15 Ngampabung, 55/21 Lungthulien and 55/ 23 in Tipaimukh AC should be closed on the same day.
