Imphal, June 19: In connection with demands for contract works, an Executive Engineer of the PWD, Building Division-II was shot at his leg by alleged cadres of the proscribed PREPAK at about 8 this morning.

The injured EE is identified as Beishmayum Kunjeshor (58) s/o late Yaiskul of Wangkhei Angom Leikai, Hidam Mapa.

He was hit by a bullet above the left knee-cap.

Kunjeshor, currently undergoing treatment at Shija Hospital, is said to be out of danger.

According to Kunjeshor, some individuals who identified themselves as cadres of the proscribed PREPAK without specifying their group came to his house last morning in connection with contract works.

This morning three individuals belonging to the same group came on a Honda Activa and insisted on talking over something at his residential gate, Kunjeshor conveyed.

As he refused to go out with them, one of them drew out a small gun and tried to drag him outside.

As a result there was a little jostling.

But in the next moment, he was shot at the leg, he recounted.

Meanwhile, family members of the Executive Engineer have appealed to all concerned not to repeat such violent activities in future.

PWD Minister K Ranjit has also condemned the incident in the strongest term saying that it was an act of cowardice.

Speaking to reporters at Shija Hospital where EE B Kunjeshor is undergoing treatment, Ranjit denounced such acts of intimidating and assaulting Government officials who have been working day and night for the welfare of the public.

Even though such acts were perpetrated by rebels, these activities never conform to revolutionary ethics.

The Minister further appealed to all concern to stay away from such criminal activities in future.
