Imphal, August 14: Imphal Municipal Council along with Government officials concerned today distributed 300 quintals of rice to flood affected people of Imphal West areas.

Disclosing this to media-persons, IMC chairman L Brajakishore Singh said that a team of IMC councillors headed by himself surveyed the flood situation of Greater Imphal areas before the rice were distributed.

As first part of flood relief campaign, 300 quintals of rice were distributed to affect people of Imphal West.

He further said that Government has sanctioned another 600 quintals of rice for the flood ravaged areas of Imphal East, particularly Sawombung, Keirao Bitra and Porompat Sub-divisions.

The rice will be distributed by the IMC relief team along with of the local club members tomorrow, he added.

He said, since yesterday the Council has been distributing potable water to affected families under its jurisdiction Upon Council's request the Chief Minister has also agreed to conduct free mobile medical camps of allopathy and veterinary in IMC areas, the chairman informed and added that the Council will be convening a meeting to chalk out further preventive measures and provide relief materials.

Meanwhile, with rainfall showing no sign of a let-up several residential and agricultural areas have been inundated causing substantial damage to standing crops.

While residential areas are flooded due to clogged and poor drainage systems, paddy fields are submerged following breach of several river banks running through the State.

Maklang River overflowed its banks and merged with Khabi River under Konthoujam assembly constituency, subsequently inundating huge tract of land.

Villagers also had a rude awakening last midnight as water flowed into dwelling places.

Besides damage to crops vehicular traffic from Sekmaijin to Khordak have been cut off with starvation staring large at the people of the area due to shortage of essential commodities, according to Sekmaijin to Khordak Ichil Joint Action Committee.

Relief camps for affected families of Khangabok areas have been set-up by Standard Education Voluntary Association assisted by local people through food and material donations.

An 'Information Centre' has been opened at Thoubal YASTA office by Thoubal District Development and Demand Committee.

The committee also appeals to Chief Minister O Ibobi and MoS IFC Tomba for providing relief materials to affected persons at the earliest.

Landslide at Karang Maning Leikai yesterday destroyed a house of one Heisnam Tomba (55) besides injuring three other persons.

With flood water submerging Khoirom, Kekru, Bamon Leikai, Bishnunaha, Siphai, Singha, Huidrom, Wangkhem of Yairi-pok areas, and Phoudel, Moirangpalli, Charangpat, Hayel Labuk, Icham Khunou, Haokha, Kiyam, Waithou Sangomsang, Heitropokpi and Kshetri Leikai of Thoubal both cattle and men have fled to safer places.

According to press releases of respective organisations, areas severely affected are Ghari Mamang and Maning Leikai, Bamon Kampu Kalika, Yourabung, Yourabung Khunjao and Khunou, Yairipok Ningthounai, Top, Tulihal, Angtha, Pourou Khongjin, Kanghuchingjin, Kai-rang and Khomidok.

It further appealed to authorities concerned to take preventive and relief measures.

A survey team of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee today visited some flood ravaged areas of Imphal East district and pledged to apprise State Government for all possible assistance.
