Thoubal commandos slay two UG suspects

Imphal, March 07: Two suspected underground activists have been gunned down by Thoubal district police commandos at Patpan Lamkhai, which is about 8 kilometre north east of kakching police station.

According to information provided by police at the spot, the commandos were on frisking duty at near Sapam Sangaikhong bus stand and signalled a white coloured Maruti Van heading towards the spot to stop at around 2.30 pm.

However, instead of halting the vehicle occupants numbering two opened fire and sped away provoking the security personnel to chase and fire subsequently killing the duo.

After the firing ceased and on searching bodies of the deceased, the commando team reportedly recovered a country made 9 mm pistol with two live rounds, one 36 HE grenade and a diary from the tool box of the vehicle (MN01K/7946).In the the diary name of one Thongam Deben of Bamon Kampu was written.

Nearly 50 bullets hit the vehicle totally damaging the window shields and deflating three tyres.

A trunk, a suitcase in lock, clothes and vegetable items like cauliflower, tomato and green chillies were also found inside the vehicle.

Of the two victims, one has pierced ears while the other was clad in a blue track suit and is well built.

The victim with pierced ears wore a black coloured jacket and cream colour trousers.

Police have deposited both the bodies at RIMs morgue.

Meanwhile, body of a suspected UG activist who was slain on March 2 after an encounter with Bishnupur district police commandos at near Keinou Mamang Patpan under Bishnupur police station has been handed over to authorities of Bishnupur Municipal Council for the last rites today.

The body had been lying at RIMS morgue since March 2 and was handed over on completion of post mortem.
