Imphal, August 06: The ongoing state assembly has assumed a new and an important dimension, which can be called an eye opener to the people who were either unwitting of the rights, privileges and the dignity of the highest forum in the state or were agnostic towards the generals norms.

It all began yesterday with Dr Nimaichand Luwang bringing to the notice of the house with regard to a government official giving a press statement of a matter, which was being discussed during the current session.

The member took strong exceptions to the demeanor of the official and stated that the act was tantamount to demeaning the dignity of the House.

Having heard the move, the Speaker TN Haokip admitted and referred the matter to the privilege committee to delve into the matter whether the act of giving a press statement by the official would be construed as a breach of privilege bringing down the dignity of the House.

The State Assembly was yet again rocked today by another issue, which the members termed 'an onslaught on the highest forum of the state'.

The issue was picked up and brought before the House by Dr Nimaichand Luwang quoting a couple of publications published in Manipur.

He read out lines from the publications, which was a reproduction of a press handout issued by an organization.

It was then O Joy who narrated incidents and gatherings where some learned and educated persons have delivered speeches lowering down the image of the members of the state assembly and the House.

He however, did not mention the names of any person while reminiscing some of the public speeches given by human right activists and scholars.

He told the House that a learned man had suggested that all the members of the House be sent to jail.

He said that there are some norms to be followed in a democratic institution thereby respecting the highest law making forum that is the Assembly.

O Joy while delivering his speech threw his gauntlet by inviting the learned man to face his ten questions.

He went on further by saying that he would denounce his being if the so-called learned man could answer any one of his ten questions rightly.

The Speaker was also of the opinion that the dignity of the House be respected and speeches or publications demeaning the House be refrained by the people.

After the motion was admitted, C Doungel shared his view that the matters be maturely examined in a controlled a manner.

His view that the members detach their sentimental involvement was agreed by Dr M Nara Singh.
