Peace call echoes at women's rally

Imphal, April 05: With slogans, 'We want peace', 'Stop killing innocent people', 'Respect the rights of women and children' in unison, a large number of women took out a protest march here today.

Organised under the joint aegis of District Women Committee, Imphal East, West, Thoubal and Chandel units of United NGO Mission, Manipur, the protest march was flagged off by Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women Dr Ch Jamini Devi from Hafta Kangjeibung.

From there, the protest march passed through New Checkon, Khurai Lamlong, Ayangpalli Road, Thawanthaba Road, Nongmeibung, Wangkhei Road before converging at the starting point again where a public meeting was held and later adopted various recommendations.

Some of the recommendations include punishment of culprits involved in killing and committing crime and violence against innocent people, sensitisation of the law enforcement agencies on gender rights, human rights and rights of women and children, initiation for dialogue, proper implementation of the Domestic Violence Act in Manipur, involving women representatives in the peace building measures and meeting medical expenses of Rabika who was injured in the recent Heirok incident and currently undergoing treatment at Shija Hospital, by the State Govt.Later on, the recommendations adopted during the public meeting were forwarded to Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh in the form of a memorandum by the representatives of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Chandel District Women Committee of United NGO Mission, Manipur.
