Imphal, February 04: Refuting the charges of distributing money to influence the voters in violation of the election code of conduct, Congress candidate from Wangjing Tentha AC M Hemanta has refuted the charges mounted by his adversary and CPI nominee and MLA Dr M Nara.

Addressing a press conference at the office of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee today, Hemanta said there is no basis for the complaint reportedly lodged by Dr Nara to the Election Commission of India in this regard as no such incident had ever taken place.

Neither me nor my wife had ever given money to any person during the election campaign at Khongjom Bazar at around 12 noon on February 3.In fact, I was at Kodompokpi ground from 9.30 am till 1.45 pm.

So the charges levelled against me are false and totally baseless, Hemanta asserted.

I am not the kind of person who would use his family members for election campaign, he added.

Turning the table on Dr Nara, Hemanta said the CPI candidate had swindled Rs 83 lakhs from his own MLA Local Area Development Fund.

Dr Nara had withdrawn the fund for the purpose of constructing four community halls at Tekcham at an estimated cost of Rs 2 lakhs each.

However, while one hall is still under the stage of under construction with just the pillars standing, there is no sign of construction of the other three halls anywhere in Tekcham area, he charged.

Hemanta further charged that although Dr Nara had withdrawn a sum of Rs 2 lakhs for the purpose of construction of a market shed at Patpan, no market shed has come up at the proposed site so far.

Dr Nara is also one such person who has been promising the duped depositors of MCT Finance Service, Wangjing for which he himself is the advisor to refund 30 percent of the deposited amount within February 28 if they are going to vote for him, Hemanta said, adding that twelve comrades of MCT Finance Service, Wangjing have looted Rs 39 crores from the people.
