Naobi medically examined, case highlighted to MHRC

Imphal, March 03: Even as maibam Naobi chanu underwent medical examination at the forensic Department (RIMS), security personnel fired several round of tear gas shells at Keishampat area today to disperse activists of various women and voluntary organisations who were protesting the alleged felony committed by police commandos on Naobi.

A civilian suffered wounds on the facial area after being hit by a tear-gas shell.

While Naobi was going through the rigours of medical examination at RIMS to authenticate veracity of her accusation against the police commandos many demonstrators holding banners and placards converged near the busy Keishampat Junction on their way to the State Legislative Assembly to air their protest at around 4 pm.

As security personnel prevented the agitators from proceeding beyond the Keishampat bridge a mild scuffle broke out between the protestors and the security force resulting in the latter firing several tear gas shells to control the situation.

Amid arrival of security reinforcement including several top rung police officials with crowd control machinery like water canon vehicle and continued shelling of tear gas canisters the protestors as well as general public ran for cover.

Many who travelling on their vehicles during the peak hour rush abandoned their vehicles as smoke emanating from the tear gas shells were unbearable.

In the chaotic scene, one M Khogendro (39) of Kwakeithel Heinou Khongnembi got hit by a tear gas shell near the nose bridge and right cheek area and had to be rushed to RIMS Hospital for treatment.

Khogendro is informed to be returning home after picking up his wife from work when they got caught in the melee.

On the other hand, Naobi arrived at the Forensic Department at around 3 pm following formal intimation from Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) to the RIMS Director for medical examination.

Naobi is informed to have lodged a complaint to the Commission highlighting police misconduct.

In her complaint, Naobi detailing her tale of sorrow and helplessness, prayed to the Commission to prescribe necessary action against the guilty.

fixing April 3 for submission of replies from the respondents, the rights body also registered the matter as an MHRC case under relevant provision of Protection of Human Rights Act 1993.The listed respondents include the State represented by the Chief Secretary, DGP, SP (Thoubal) and Commando OC (Thoubal unit).

Naobi of Yairipok Leirongthel was arrested by Thoubal police commandos in connection with the PLA attack on Inspector N Lokhon and his team with the girl revealing to the media of police personnel physically assaulting and molesting her while in police custody.
