Arrest warrant issued against blockade leaders

Imphal, May 05 2010: In a significant development, that could have far reaching consequences, the Imphal bench of the Gauhati High Court has instructed the State police to arrest the leaders of the student organisations which are currently imposing an indefinite economic blockade on the National Highways against the ADC election.

Backed by various Naga civil societies, the All Manipur Students' Association, Manipur has been imposing an indefinite economic blockade to protest the election to the ADCs under the 2008 Amendment since April.

Acting on a PIL filed by one Rajkumar Joysana Singh, Justices TNK Singh and Mutum BK Singh instructed the State DGP to arrest the president of ANSAM, David Choro and president of ATSUM, Thomas, both residents of Senapati district.

The Court directed the DGP, Addl DGP and IGP (LO) to produce the said two student leaders before the Court on May 13 .

The Court, as an interim measure, has also directed the Chief Secretary to 'take up all necessary steps for the purpose of maintaining undisrupted flow of essential commodities, through NH-39 and NH-53' .
