Market women bodies call 24 hr bandh today

Imphal, July 23 2009: Khwairamband Keithel Phambi Apunba Ima Lup, All Manipur Roadside Vendors' Welfare Association, Khwai Central Ima Market and the Manipur Keithel Nupi Marup have called a 24-hour statewide bandh beginning from midnight of June 23 to register protest against the indiscriminate firing at crowded market-place in Imphal today and to denounce the detention of two leaders of the vendors � Ima L Mema and Ima Jano Begum � by the police.

In a joint statement signed by the secretary of the All Manipur Roadside Vendors' Association and president of the Manipur Keithel Nupi Marup Y Ibeni, the women vendors have strongly condemned the incident of firing by unknown gunmen at the crowded market-place in Imphal today which resulted in the death of an innocent young mother and injury of vendors and shoppers.

The statement also condemned the detention of two women vendors' leaders by the Imphal West police led by AK Jhalajit on charge of instigating tension after the incident.

In protest against the police action, the vendors have closed their shops to condemn the incident.

It stated that the 24-hour bandh has been called to put an end to any firing incidents at crowded places in future.

The statement further appealed to all individuals and organisations concerned including vendors in all the districts to support the bandh.
