370 vehicles enroute to Imphal

Imphal, May 27 2010: Out of the several hundreds of vehicles which were stranded at Jiribam and other places of Assam, around 370 vehicles including passenger buses have started moving towards Imphal today.

The convoy of vehicles escorted by personnel of 1st Bn Manipur Rifles left Jiribam for Imphal along NH 53 at about 8 am today.

Earlier, around 300 stranded trucks reached Imphal last Saturday and Sunday in two batches.

The first batch was led by CAF & PD Minister Y Erabot from Jiribam till Imphal.

It is reported that Assam Rifles, BSF and CRPF have been keeping a sharp vigil along the highway to thwart any subversive attempt by blockade supporters.

Except for eight passenger buses and seven Tata Sumo taxis, all other vehicles are goods laden trucks.

The convoy includes 21 LPG carriers, 24 petrol tankers, 36 diesel tankers, three kerosene tankers and three trucks carrying lubricants.

The convoy also includes 18 trucks carrying rice, 111 trucks carrying cement, seven trucks carrying iron/steel, 20 trucks carrying poultry feeds and 100 other trucks carrying different items.

It is reported that most of the trucks have crossed Barak bridge this afternoon.

But it could not be confirmed whether the convoy can reach Imphal tonight.
