Andro voters to decide fate of jailed candidate

Imphal, January 23: With the blessing of their respective political organisations poll aspirants have embarked on their mission to woo the voters but among the numerous contestant is one Thounoujam Shyamkumar Singh, an MPP nominee, currently lodged in Tihar jail, for the Andro Assembly Constituency.

Obviously in Shyamkumar's absence the task of galvanizing support is being carried out by his wellwishers undeterred despite his detention.

Shyamkumar (41) son of Th Binoy of Yairipok Yambem village located about 25 kms from here, was arrested along with two others companions by Delhi police personnel for their alleged link with the banned United National Liberation Front (UNLF) from Indira Gandhi International airport while the trio were trying to board a Katmandu bound aircraft on October 2, last.

Shyamkumar's accomplices are informed to be prominent members of the armed outfit.

Since then he has been lodged in judicial custody in Tihar jail, New Delhi on charges of being a sympathizer of the banned organisation.

Andro AC has 26870 voters.

Shyamkumar had contested the assembly polls on two earlier occasions on Congress ticket and in the last election held in 2002 he was placed third with 4513 votes, while the elected candidate S Chandra Singh obtained 5181 followed by one Shayeed Ahamad in second place.

Shyamkumar's followers are confident that their projected leader would be among them soon.

They conveyed of a Court at New Delhi having heard a bail application filed by Shyamkumar's counsel recently and the Court keeping its verdict reserved.

The same might be pronounced in a few days' time, they confided.

Th Nabachandra, elder brother of Thounoujam has moved to New Delhi to the get his nomination papers signed, they added.
