Sit-in-protest intensifies, demands befitting punishment

Imphal, March 10: Unsatisfied with the mere suspension of commando personnel involved in the custodial torture and sexual harassment of M Naobi, many women bodies and civil societies have intensified sit-in-protest agitation in several parts of the State.

At Naoremthong Bazar, a sit-in-protest was organised by the Uripok Joint Action Committee, Women Front in which about 300 women participated in the silent agitation from 9 am to 3 pm today.

A statement issued by the Front informed that the sit-in-protest was in protest of the inhuman treatment meted out to M Naobi by State forces and in demand of the resignations of SPF ministers who had failed in their duty to protect the live of citizens, to ensure commensurate punishment to commandos involved and termination of CJM Thoubal who failed to uphold justice and women rights.

Meanwhile, the Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi (PALEM) has asserted that the sexual assault to M Naobi by police commandos was an open invitation for direct confrontation to all womenfolk.

In a statement, it reiterated that such atrocity committed against innocent civilians by security forces is an open act of state terrorism.

It also urged for befitting punishment to the commandos for their inexcusable crime or hand over the issue to public if the State Government is unable to deliver justice.

Further the women body pledged all possible help in all the endeavours taken up by the JAC towards teaching a befitting lesson to the perpetrators of such a ghastly crime.

Just a in other places sit-in-protests were organised by PALEM at Wairi, Maniyaiskul and Pourabi, Nungoi.

On the other hand, the All Manipur Thoubal District United Clubs' Organisation (ATDUCO) has called upon the State Government to terminate from service CJM, Thoubal Mrs Kim for alleged responsibility in the prolonged torture of M Naobi by commandos.

A statement issued by ATDUCO maintained that the criminal commandos involved in the inhuman atrocity against Naobi must be banished and boycotted by the local people of these personnel.

It reiterated that the State Government should terminate those personnel and award exemplary punishment rather than attempting to eye wash people with mere suspension.

While warning to all concerned for their alleged intimidation of individuals spearheading the movement against the atrocities of commandos that any untoward eventuality arising out of such dictatorial approach should be borne by the SPF Government, it assured its unflinching support to all people's movement against any act of terrorism.

Likewise, a sit-in-protest organised by Nupishingiee Apunba Yaipha Lup, Khullem Leikai has categorically demanded the resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi who is also in charge of Home Department for his alleged failure to rein in the commandos who are making a fun of the law.
