Condemnation over ISKCON blast unabated

Imphal, Aug 23: United NGOs Mission has strongly condemned the hand grenade attack at ISKCON complex at Imphal in which five people were killed and around 40 injured as well as the firing attack at a Church in Churachandpur district killing one person and causing injuries to five others.

Addressing a press conference at Manipur Press Club here today, secretary of the organisation Urikhinbam Nabakishore said killing innocent people by the security forces as well as by the underground activist is really unfortunate and there could be nothing more irresponsible than that.

Since Armed Forces Special Powers Act is still in force in Manipur, the Central Government should be held responsible for both the violent incidents, Nabakishore said.

Meanwhile, Wakat Meephams continue to be held at different parts of the State in protest against the escalating violence in public places including the August 16 bomb attack at ISKCON complex at Imphal and the August 20 firing attack by security forces at a Church in Churachandpur district.

Women vendors of Khwai Central Market, Nagamapal staged a Wakat Meepham today in protest against the ISKCON incident and decried the failure of the Government to protect the lives of the civilians.

The women protestors also demanded those who are responsible for the attack at the religious place to owe up and come out with a clarification.

Nupi Khunai Apunba Lup also organised a similar protest demonstration from 10 am to 4 pm at Lamshang Keithel shed today and demanded booking of the perpetrators of crimes.

Meira Paibis bodies of Patsoi Part III and IV also joined organised a sit-in-protest demonstration in condemnation of the ISKCON incident and fervently appealed to all concerned to ensure such violent attacks are not carried out in crowed public places in future.

While condemning the bomb attack at ISKCON, students and staff of Nirmalabas School, Imphal also held a condolence meeting today and prayed for peaceful repose of the departed souls and speedy recovery of the injured persons.

Councillor of Ward no.6, IMC RK Rani Devi led a large number of local Meira Paibi activists of Uripok area and staged a Wakat Meepham in protest against the August 16 bomb attack at ISKCON at Naoremthong Bazar today.

Describing it as an act of terrorism and cowardice, the Sagolmang Women's Prohibition Committee and the Lamphel Super Market Unit of United Committee Manipur (UCM) have also come out strongly against attack on religious places.
