Ukhrul SDO burns down, protest staged at Ukhrul town

Imphal, May 14 2010: Office of the Sub-Divisional Officer at Ukhrul district headquarters was set on fire by miscreants in the broad daylight today in the continue spree of torching government offices in the hill districts.

Important office documents along with furniture and building of the office were turned into ashes in the fire burnt incident occurred today, at about noon.

As many as 27 government offices have so far been burnt down by miscreants suspected to be suporters of NSCN(IM) and Muivah in the four districts of Senapati, Chandel, Ukhrul and Tamenglong since the violence incident at Mao gate on May 6 last.

On the other hand, a sit-in protest was staged near the Ukhrul town hall today decrying state government stand on Muivah's visit and in support of his visit in his birthplace, Somdal today.

Some residents of Ukhrul district headquarters hoping that Muivah will be visiting the state had completed preparation for a reception at Tangkhul Ngana Long ground.

Some residents are hoping that Muivah will be visiting the town at the earliest, reported Angam Shatsang of Hueiyen Lanpao.

He said that despite reports of defer of Muivah's visit in the state, installation of stage at Tangkhul Ngana Long Ground for reception of Muivah had completed.

However, he added none of the residents in the town talk of his visit.

But some social organisations made the preparations.

Ukhrul town was almost normal otherwise the non-availability of petroleum products at retail outlets.

But petrol and diesel are available at higher prices at the black market, he added.

Where the petroleum products are reaching in the town could not be ascertained but its available in the market in black, he added.
