Students agitating for Monika detained in Delhi

Imphal, August 12: At least 70 students of Manipur pursuing different academic courses in the national capital have been taken into custody by Delhi police for staging protest in denunciation of L Monika Devi's controversial omission from the Indian contingent.

The students, after staging peaceful sit-in-protest organized under the aegis of Manipur Students' Association Delhi at ITO Junction in New Delhi this afternoon later marched for the Union Sports Ministry's office complex but were arrested for shouting slogans against the alleged discriminatory attitude and ill-treatment of sportspersons from Manipur as well as demanding punitive action against SAI, Delhi officials Satish Rana and RK Naidu.

The sit-in-protest was also participated by Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency MP Dr Th Meinya Singh.

The protestors, who were reportedly attempting to march toward SAI head office in Indira Gandhi Stadium at around 4pm, were stopped by a team of Delhi police before reaching their targeted destination.

Sources told The Sangai Express that Dr Meinya and Sports Minister N, Biren have approached authorities of Parliament Street Police Station to secure release of the 70 detained students.

There is no report for their release till the filing of this report.
