ADC polls: Cong issues tickets to 71 candidates

Imphal, May 02 2010: Obstructions coming up in the way of holding elections to Autonomous Election Council (ADC) have prevented many aspirant individuals from filing nomination in Chandel and Churachandpur districts where the elections is to be held on May 26 with the last date of filing the nomination papers on May 4 .

Owing to the obstructions coming up from the Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO), many individuals who wanted to contest election were not able to obtain nomination papers, reports said.

In Churachandpur district also Kuki based NGOs and Kuki based militants under ceasefire with government forces under the Suspension of Operation reportedly threatened aspirant candidates not to contest election under Congress tickets.

On the other hand, Congress has reportedly cleared names of 71 individuals for contesting election as party candidate in the first phase elections in Chandel, Churachandpur and Sadar Hills ADCs.

The BJP, Manipur Pradesh has also announced names of eight persons to be contested in the elections as party candidates.

Names of 20 more individuals are likely to clear by tomorrow.

A meeting of the parliamentary affairs board of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), state unit has also given shortlisted names of 25 candidates to be fielded in the elections.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state unit had also given tickets to 11 individuals.

Out of them eight are for Churachandpur, three are in Sadar Hill, party source said.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), Manipur State Council is also considering for fielding party candidates in the upcoming ADC election while Trinamool Congress has given clearance to eight persons, of which five are in Sadar hill district and three in Chandel district.

CPI, state council has given tickets to six persons to contest the election and names of eight more are likely to clear by tomorrow.

For the People's Democratic Alliance (PDA), the stand taken by the party to stay away from the election is remained unchanged.

MPP is also saying nothing about fielding party candidates in the elections.
