Rescued kids recount ordeal in Chennai

Imphal, September 01: After rejoining with their parents, the twenty-two children rescued by district administration Chennai and Childline Chennai recounted their stay at Chennai and how they were taken there.

Taking part in a function organised by the Child Welfare Committee at their Nungourok office today, the children recounted their ordeal.

The function was also attended by parents of the children, officials of Social Welfare office and members CWC.

One 8 year old boy who was among the rescued kids said that while staying at Life Trust Children Home at Chennai they could not sleep on bed.

Even though they were sent to schools, no school uniform was provided.

Moreover, they were taught in Tamil medium.

On being asked whether he would like to stay at Chennai, the boy said that he would stay in Manipur.

On arriving at Life Trust, all of them were given used clothes.

He wore the same slippers he wore while going from Moreh to Chennai, the boy said.

In addition to not using mosquito nets, the children home did not have adequate toilet facilities.

According to the parents of the children, their children were taken to Chennai by Pastor Beck with the promise of giving free education up to class X at Chennai.

Social Welfare officials, however, said that while taking any child across the State border for education, due permission should be sought first from CWC under JJ Act.

As the children were taken to Chennai without necessary permission, all those involved in the case should be punished according to law, they maintained.
