MPP, Cong workers clash at Thoubal

Imphal, January 22: Clash between the workers of MPP candidate from Thoubal Assembly Constituency MLA L Tomba and workers of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh who would be contesting in the upcoming State Assembly election as Congress candidate from both Khangabok and Thoubal A/Cs reportedly broke out during election campaign of Tomba at Thoubal Ningombam area today.

Taking strong exception to the alleged unruly conduct of the workers of Ibobi Singh who would be contesting upcoming election from both Thoubal and Khangabok A/Cs, MLA Tomba who would also be contesting in the election as MPP candidates has warned of lodging complaint to Election Commission of India and Chief Election Officer if the Ibobi does not rein in on his men.

The clash reportedly occurred while the workers of MLA Tomba were coming for election campaigning.

According to reports, as the workers of Tomba approached Thoubal Ningombam Singam Leirak, more popularly known as Bombay Leirak among the local people, the workers of Ibobi Singh allegedly stopped and pushed them to prevent from campaigning in the area, thereby leading to some heated argument between two groups.

In the ensuing melee, a woman worker of MLA Tomba was allegedly beaten up by the supporters Ibobi Singh.

In connection with the incident, MLA Tomba strongly condemned the unruly conduct of the workers of Ibobi Singh and said if such incident of using muscle power recur he would lodge complaint with the Election Commissioner of India and the Chief Electoral Officer of the State.

He also complained against the alleged inaction of the police to rush to the spot despite having reported the matter by himself.

Thoubal A/C would go to poll in the first phase of the election on February 8.
