Poll violence in CCpur

Imphal, February 16: Exactly six days before CCpur goes to poll, violence has begun to mar the largely peaceful atmosphere during the past 24 hours.

CCpur along with Chandel, Tamenglong and Jiribam will go to polls on February 23.Convening a press meet in his residence, T Hangkhanpau, NPP candidate from Singngat AC today alleged that about 150 supporters of INC candidate Thangso Baite and some cadres of the Kuki National Army under the leadership of KNA�s Deputy Commissioner Dempau Haokip removed NPP posters and flags at Songpeh.

He alleged that while carrying out their act, a 27 year old youth identified as Solomon of Songpeh which he produce before the media, was severely thrash as he had protested their diktats.

On hearing the incident he immediately rushed to Songpeh village with his escort party and discovered that a youth had been tortured and was secreted with threats, he adds.

An FIR with regards to the incident has been lodged and the injured youth already produced before the Returning Officer and SP/CCpur.

Hangkhanpau also claimed that in a similar incident at Lingsiphai Village last night, a group of people had ensnared and assaulted his workers while they were returning from campaign at Singngat village.

Of the seven occupants that were onboard the attacked vehicle, five were injured he said.

He however deny the contention that his supporters may have provoke such an incident, rather, he was upset that the supporters of his contender chooses the path of violence at a time when his supporters were serene and passive.

Pledging for more security Hangkhanpau today appeal to the concern authority to ensure a secure environment and ensure that such unfortunate incident does not mar the poll process again.

This contender, often billed as a definite winner nevertheless denied he will reiterate the actions of his rivals as he had faith in the electoral system of the country.
