Imphal, April 09: While taking a strong exception to the continued excesses committed by the State of India in Manipur, the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup has called upon the media fraternity of the State to spearhead the endeavour to highlight the excesses of the security force and bring the matter to international media.

A statement issued by the Lup observed that even after India became a signatory of many international covenants and conventions concerning protection of human rights, the excesses of the security personnel continue to haunt the Manipuris.

It observed that extra-judicial killings, fake encounters, rapes, illegal detention, involuntary disappearances and many other forms of atrocities have become the order of the day in Manipur.

The Apunba Lup also recounted numerous incidents of gross violation of human rights by State forces.

Leaving apart other incidents, it categorically mentioned the fresh incidents like severe physical torture of innocent civilians by security forces at Maphou dam, murder of a woman and injuring her child who were seeking safety under a bed at Khoibu Khullen, murder of Hemam Naocha in a fake encounter on the intervening night of April 3 and 4 at Saiton by the combined force of 7 Assam Rifles and Bishnupur District police commandos etc.

Since a long time back the people of the State have been relentlessly struggling against the excesses of the security force including the historic three months long statewide agitation for repeal of AFSPA 1958 in the aftermath of the rape and murder of Thangjam Manorama in 2004 but there is no let up in the atrocities of the security forces.

It alleged that such State excesses with an ulterior motive.
