Healthy turn out in repoll recorded

Imphal, April 28: With heavy deployment of State forces and para military personnel, repoll at four polling stations for the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency in Imphal West and Bishnupur districts concluded peacefully today.

According to information provided by the Chief Electoral Officer's office the total turnout reached a healthy 67.51 percent.

Tera Amudon polling station (11/1) in Imphal West district polled 802 votes against the total 1062 while 374 out of 666 electorates voted at Laphupat Tera (23/31) poll centre.

In Kha-Thinungei-B (28/21) of Bishnupur district total votes cast numbered 551 out of 698 and at Kumbi-D (29/11) polling stations 595 voters exercised their franchise against the total number of 1013.Compared to other polling stations that went to repoll today, special security emphasis was given to Laphupat Tera where the first phase poll had to be countermanded following destruction of poll material like EVMs when suspected underground elements way-laid poll personnel and snatched the polling items.

The UGs had also torched three Tata Sumos requisitioned to carry poll personnel and material on the eve of the April 26 election.

For this hyper sensitive polling station, security ring was thrown for about twenty kilometre with Imphal West SP S Ibocha, II IRB CO S Manglemjao and CO 2nd MR CO Clay Khongsai monitoring deployment and vigil of security personnel throughout the poll hours.

Talking to The Sangai Express SP S Ibocha informed that the tight security measure at Laphupat Tera was undertaken at the instruction of the CEO.

Due to adequate presence of security personnel, the voters came out in large number to exercise their franchise without any inhibition.

At the Tera Amudon centre contesting candidates Dr T Meinya of the Congress, Dr L Chandramani of the FPM and Dr M Nara Singh of the CPI witnessed voting till the end while BJP's Th Chaoba reportedly arrived at the scene during the early hours of polling.

Polls rescheduled again: In partial modification of the earlier schedule, the Chief Electoral Officer has issued a new order whereby rescheduled polls would be conducted at 64 polling stations scattered through Tamenglong district on April 30 with the remaining ones included in the May 5 repoll.

On April 21, the CEO had rescheduled the polls at 64 polling stations in the district, eight in Jiribam sub-division and 13 in Vangai Range on April 30.However, as per the new order, only polling stations at Tamenglong district would go for the polls on April 30 while those within Jiribam and Churachandpur would be conducted on May 5.
