3 UGs killed, bomb explosions rock State on poll eve

Imphal, April 25: Even as the general strike called by the UNLF in connection with the boycott of the Lok Shobha election came into force from 12 midnight today, security personnel stuck and eliminated three militants today.

A series of bomb explosions also rocked different parts of the State, ostensibly to co-incite with the boycott call given by the underground outfit.

A team of Imphal East district commandos gunned down three UGs and injured one during a fierce encounter at Yairipok Yambem this afternoon at the around 3.40 said sources.

According to reports received from police, the encounter took place when the commando team who was escorting polling personnel to Nongbram and Keithelmanbi of Yairipok accidentally came across a group of well armed UGs traveling on a van (MNIK3042) towards Yairipok at Yairipok Yambem.

Surprised at the sudden appearance of the commando team the UGs immediately fired two lathod bombs at the commandos from the van, added the report.

The commandos immediately retaliated and in the ensuing encounter, three UGs were killed and another seriously injured.

The injured has been identified as Nahakpam Doren(35) of Yairipok Yambem who is the owner as well as the driver of the van, said the report adding that the van was taken by the UGs at around 1.30pm today.

Commandos recovered two AK-47 Rifles, one Lathod bomb, 15bullets and a small arm from the slain UGs, added the source.

The bodies of the three unidentified UGs have been retrieved by police and are currently kept at the Yairipok PS.

In another incident unidentified gunmen attacked the 132 CRPF post attached to the Kumbi police station today at about 7.20pm.the CRPF personnel also returned fire and a brief encounter lasting for a few minutes ensued, said sources.

There is however no report of any casualty on either side.

Bomb explosions rock poll eve, Unidentified persons exploded a bomb near the Iron bridge at Thanga Chinglak Bazar this evening at around 5.the blast however did not injure any body nor cause any serious damage to the bridge.

A bomb also explosion rocked Heirangoithong area this afternoon at around 1.30 but failed to cause any serious damages.

Two bomb blast simultaneously rocked Moirang Bazar this morning at around 7.10 but caused no causalities.

Later in the evening, suspected UGs also exploded two bombs at Sagolband Thong Ahanbi and the Keishampat Leimajam Leirak Machin at 7.30 and 9 respectively.

Even though the blast at Keishampat Leimajam claimed no casualty, an auto driver was injured during the blast at Sagolband Thong Ahanbi.

In another incident last night, a bomb planted by suspected UGs on a tree near the Sagolband Ibudhou Lampak also exploded at around 11.30.the blast however did not claim any casualty.

Meanwhile security has been beefed up at all the major roads and lens of Imphal for the polls scheduled to be held tomorrow.
