Rishang, Chandramani fall on day of surprises

Imphal, February 25: The second day of counting of votes for the 8th Assembly elections threw up some big surprises with several more political heavyweights falling.

Chief among these are former chief minister Rishang Keishing, former deputy CM Dr L Chandramani and Speaker Dr Sapam Dhananjoy.

Results of all 40 Assembly constituencies in the valley areas, and all of the hill constituencies, except those where repolls are due to take place have been declared.

The Congress is still in the lead, securing 15 of the 52 seats whose results have been declared so far, while the Federal Party of Manipur remains in second place with 12 seats.

The MSCP is in third place, with six seats, while the CPI; making its strongest showing in recent years, is in fourth place with five seats.

The Congress(I) however suffered a major defeat in 43-Phungyar constituency, where the longest serving chief minister of the state, Rishang Keishing, lost to the Manipur State Congress Party's Wungnaoshang Keishing by a margin of 989 votes.

The victor secured a total of 4412 votes while Rishang secured 3423 votes.

In another bracing win for the MSCP, journalist turned politician Bijoy Koijam defeated Speaker Dr Sapam Dhananjoy by a margin of 1781 votes in Thongju A/c.Bijoy Koijam secured a total of 7510 votes.

The CPI's Moirangthem Nabadwip caused another upset in Patsoi constituency, defeating former deputy CM and president of the Federal Party of Manipur, Dr L Chandramani, by a margin of 922 votes.

Nabadwip secured 8622 votes.

In 6-Keirao A/c, Md Allauddin Khan, Congress (I) candidate, secured 5293 votes to emerge the winner.

Karam Thamarjit Singh, MNC, was in second place while the constituency's last representative, H Bidur, was in third place.

In 7-Andro, FPM candidate Salam Chandra was re-elected, beating his nearest rival Sahid Ahamad of the SAP by a margin of 314 votes.

In 8-Lamlai, the CPI's Pheiroijam Parijat was elected to the Assembly, securing 5652 votes.

His nearest rival was K Ibomcha Singh of the NCP, who received 5457 votes.

In 13-Singjamei, Col (retd) Haobam Bhuban of the NCP was defeated by Irengbam Hemochandra of the FPM by a margin of 1000 votes.

Hemochandra secured a total of 7172 votes.

In 18-Konthoujam, the former finance minister, H Lokhon was defeated by the DPP's Thokchom Meinya.

Meinya secured 5152 votes as against 4027 votes secured by Lokhon.

In 23-Mayang Imphal, FPM candidate M Nilachandra defeated his nearest rival Abdul Salam of the MNC, by a narrow margin of 76 votes.

Nilachandra secured 5688 votes as against Abdul Salam's 5612.In 29-Kumbi, the CPI's N Mangi has been returned to the Assembly, securing a total of 5139 votes.

His nearest rival was the BJP's A Angousana Singh, who was 623 votes behind.

In 32-Wangkhem, Dr Nimaichand Luwang, representing the MPP, was re-elected, beating his nearest rival, Thokchom Chandra of the MSCP by a margin of 74 votes.

Dr Nimaichand secured a total of 6139 votes.

In 33-Heirok, the INC's Moirangthem Oken was defeated by the FPM's N Sovakiran Singh, who secured a total of 9376 votes.

Oken secured 8776 votes.

In 34-Wangjing Tentha, the MSCP's M Hemanta was defeated at the hands of the CPI's Moirangthem Nara Singh.

Nara received a total of 9274 votes as against 7720 votes received by Hemanta.

In 35-Khangabok, the state Congress chief Okram Ibobi was elected, defeating the sitting MLA, L Jatra Singh by a margin of 2330 votes.

Ibobi secured 12,897 votes as against Jatra's 10,567.In 36-Wabagai, INC candidate Md Abdul Salam defeated his nearest rival M Manihar of the MSCP, securing a total of 7512 votes as against 7496 votes secured by his rival.

In 38-Hiyanglam, M Kunjo of the FPM was defeated by the NCP's Elangbam Biramani Singh by a margin of 1254 votes.

The NCP candidate secured altogether 6095 votes.

In 39-Sugnu A/c, Kangabam Ranjit of the INC was re-elected receiving a total of 7308 votes.

His nearest rival, Kh Iboyaima of the DPP secured 5675 votes.

In 44-Ukhrul Ale, Danny Shaiza of the BJP retained his seat, defeating AS Arthur of the Congress by a comprehensive margin of over 4000 votes.

Shaiza secured 12,285 votes as against Arthur's 8023 votes.

In 46-Saikul A/c, Chungkhokai Doungel of the NCP was re-elected, securing a total of 9989 votes.

His rearest rival, Doukhomang Khongsai of the NCP secured 7826 votes.

In 47-Karong, a new face, PS Henry Paotei of the Federal Party of Manipur defeated the Congress(I)'s DD Thaisu by a margin of over a thousand votes.

PS Henry Paotei secured 10,304 votes.

L Jonathan of the SAP was in third place with 7090 votes.

In 50-Kangpokpi, FPM candidate Thangminlien Kipgen was re-elected with 9265 votes, defeating his nearest rival Hari Prasad Nepali of the BJP by over 3000 votes.

Meanwhile, in 58-Churachandpur A/c, T Phungzathang Tonsing of the Congress defeated V Hangkhanlian of the NCP by a margin of 228 votes.

Phungzathang secured 15271 votes as against 15043 votes secured by his rival.

Also, in 59-Saikot, INC candidate TN Haokip has been declared elected, defeating the NCP's N Chungkhosei.

TN Haokip secured a total of 14,621 votes while Chungkhosei received 10,535 votes.
