Imphal, April 19: Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh today said that giving obstruction to Indian democratic system while fully knowing the danger being posed to the integrity of Manipur would not bring any desirable result.

In an appeal, the Chief Minister maintained that many who have concern for the unity and integrity of Manipur had been putting pressure on the Central Government to respect the territorial integrity of the State.

But the opinion expressed by some NGOs against holding of Lok Sabha election by asserting that it will not be able to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur is really unfortunate.

Without mentioning the name of any NGOs in particular, but apparently referring to AMUCO's statement wherein it said that election has no meaning for the people of Manipur and pledges of the candidates for protecting the "territorial integrity of Manipur is just a ploy to get votes, Ibobi asserted that election process through which the people elect their representatives itself is the main task for safeguarding the integrity of the State and bringing unity among the people.

To consider those persons who like to take part in the election process and exercise their right as citizen of the country in electing their representatives as anti-Manipur is meaningless, he said.

Again, without naming NSCN (I-M), Ibobi observed that even the rebel group which was trying to dismember Manipur for carving out Greater Nagaland has started having faith in the system of Indian democracy and is believed to have sponsored some candidates in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election.

This rebel group, which at one time had outrightly rejected the Constitution of the country, has now realized the role of the Indian Parliament in realizing their dream.

At such a crucial juncture, the stand of some of the NGOs, which are working for the integrity of Manipur, in opposing the Indian democratic system is unreasonable, the Chief Minister said, adding that people of the State would not forgive these NGOs if the representatives of those who were trying to disintegrate Manipur get elected because of the restrictions imposed by them.

Recalling the statement of the Indian Prime Minister who had said that there has been no 'political consensus' on the issue of forming a Greater Nagaland during his recent visit to Nagaland, the Chief Minister assumed that pro-Greater Nagaland group must have thought of sending their own representatives to the highest decision making body of the country for some obvious reasons.

Intelligent and sensible people of the State knew that Manipur being part of the Indian union could never brush aside the decision of the Parliament, formed with representatives of the people of the country, Ibobi added.

Stating that Congress party has no two opinions on the question of territorial integrity of Manipur, Ibobi quoted the words of Congress president Sonia Gandhi who had reportedly told NSCN (I-M) leaders during a meeting at Delhi not to take up any step which might create more problems while trying to find solution to a particular problem.
