Imphal, April 17: DIG Range-1 M Karnajit will lead the Special Task Force of the Police set up by the State Government to probe into the incident of kidnapping for ransom and subsequent murder of two students of Don Bosco High School, Senapati.

The Commandos who will be required by the Task Force have also been kept reserved by the Government.

The Task Force to be led by DIG Karnajit will be assisted by Senior SP of Imphal East L Kailun and Additional SP of Imphal West Md Jalil.

On the other hand, with Chief Minister O Ibobi in the chair a joint meeting attended by Chief Secretary, DGP, IG and SPs was held this afternoon to discuss the problem being faced by the police in containing the law and order problem and other infratructural requirements.

The Chief Minister has also directed the DGP to submit a report on the infrastructural requirements for upgrading the police stations/outposts at Sugnu, Andro, Noney and Kwakeithel.

Meanwhile a high ranking official while talking to The Sangai Express and quoting a source said that the meeting discussed primarily on how to reduce violence in the State.

Apart from the steps to be taken up for containing violence, the meeting also discussed the possibility of assessing the performance of police officers.

Since the respective SPs and their subordinates are in the field, their performance would be judged, said the source and hinted that the criterion to be taken into consideration will include the physical and mental leadership of the officer concerned.

Another well placed source, while talking to The Sangai Express said that the police from its side put across the many difficulties it face while discharging its duties.

The source said that the from the part of the police it was conveyed to the CM that the force faces many inconveniences such as man power shortage, lack of mobility due to shortage of vehicles etc.

The idea of introducing the shift system for the policemen was also mooted during the meeting, said the source and added that the Chief Minister was amenable to the idea.

Better accommodation for the prsonnel as well as better pay and perks was also put before the meeting, added the source.

Merely deploying more paramilitary personnel cannot better policing as these forces cannot dispense the duties of the police, added the source.
