Imphal, February 16: Re-polling in a total of 31 polling stations in the valley districts was held peacefully and without any untoward incident today bringing to and end the first phase of polling of the 8th Assembly elections.

Re-polls were held under heavy security in 15 polling stations in Imphal east district, covering six Assembly segments, at a single polling station in Imphal west district and at another 15 poling stations in five polling stations in Thoubal district.

An overall turnout of 89 % was recorded during the re-polls, which ended at 4 pm today.

The re-polls were necessitated after various incidents of violence, including destruction of elections material, disrupted voting at these polling stations on February 14.Personnel of Manipur Police, MR and the IRB were deployed in strength at all polling booths, while the Assam Rifles, CRFP and BSF conducted patrolling in the vicinity.

At 39/7 polling station, voting commenced only around 10.50 am today, the delay being on account of a huge meeting of voters of the Umathel area convened by the Naharup Yaipha Thousilup, for giving absolute support to a particular candidate.

The stations saw brisk voting after polling commenced under the eye of a platoon of the 2nd IRB.
