Violence takes its toll - Two including one non-local shot dead

Ukhrul, September 15: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a person at Neikanlong located along the foothill of Cheiraoching near Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai under Lamphel Police Station in Imphal East at around 6.25 pm today.

The body of the victim whose identity is yet to be established has been picked up by the police and deposited at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.

According to police report, the victim was found clad in a red T-shirt, white half-pant and a pair of sandals.

One mobile phone has been recovered from the victim who bore two fatal bullet marks, one on his jaw and the other on the chest.

On the other hand, police retrieved a body which was found lying at Suipijang Village under Saikul Police Station of Senapati district at around 5.30 am today.

On the other hand the bullet riddled body of a non-Manipur has been recovered from Irengbam maning leikai under Nambol police station in Bishnupur district this morning.

The deceased has been identified as one Luthapur Rahman (29) s/o Md Zamin of Madhubani district in Bihar, but was staying at a rented quarter in Pandon area of Imphal West district.

The body was recovered at around 6.30 am, said a police source while speculating that Rahman might have been shot at around midnight.

Family members said Rahman used to supply vegetables to Army units/posts and had left home some days back.

The body has been handed over to family members after the post mortem at RIMS morgue today.

On the otherhand, the person shot dead by a combined team of Imphal West district police commandos and troops of 12 Maratha LI at Shamurou Awang Leikai last evening has been identified as one Laishram Romio alias Romi (28) s/o L Ibocha of Uripok Bachaspati Leikai.

Family members and local club members contended that Romio was an innocent civilian involved in masonry works to supplement family income.

They also maintained that Romio was picked up by some unidentified persons, who came in a Maruti Gypsy (MN1K/9186) and Maruti Alto car (MN1K/5218) from Uripok Canteen Leirak at around 11 am yesterday.

Inquiry of whether security forces were involved in picking up Romio was dismissed/negated from the office of Imphal West district police station.

Family members and locals denouncing the killing of Romio and refusing to claim the body today staged sit-in-protest.

Meanwhile, identity has also been established of the second individual slain by uniformed personnel of Imphal West police commando unit and 15 Assam Rifles on September 12 evening at near Singda Dam.

The victim is said to be one Nongthonbam Nanao alias Premananda (30) s/o Sarat of Langol Punshikhul.

Nanao is informed to be the brother-in-law of Laishram Sunil of Ngaikhong Khullen Mayai Leikai, who was also slain in the same firing incident.

Sunil's body was claimed yesterday with Nanao's corpse handed over to family members today.
