Flash flood claims over 50 lives at border area, village swept away
Three killed in Thoubal, water level flowing above danger marks, hundreds of acres of paddy fields submerged, many displaced

Imphal, August 13: Over 50 people mostly women were killed when a flash flood hit Bai Khul and Hiranpham village, hamlets located on the Indo-Myanmar border.

Sources said the flash flood occurred when the Khujairok river which empties into the Ningthi river in Myanmar over flowed following the incessant rain during the last few days.

Twenty four bodies have so far been recovered from Paihet Shao village.

The flash flood occurred in the wee hours of yesterday while most of the villagers were fast asleep, said sources and added that most of the houses of the village have been washed away by the swirling torrents.

The identity of those killed in the flash flood are yet to be ascertained.

Sources however confirmed that the casualty do not include any native of Manipur.

One house was also swept at Moreh ward number six while Namphalong market was deserted due to flood.

THOUBAL: One of five persons washed away by the swirling water at Thoubal Sabaltongba was recovered dead late this evening while the body of another is yet to be traced.

Three have been rescued, said sources.

The deceased is identified as Okram Aboicha (12) son of O Imocha and while the missing boy is identified as Okram Romeo (13) son of Ibomcha, both from Thoubal Ningombam Maning Leikai.

They were swept away when the embankments of Thoubal river breached today at about 1 pm.

A villager died of electrocution at Moijing Ningombam area in the district when he came in contact with a live wire submerged in the flood water, sources said.

Embankments were breached at Tentha and Nungphou areas which led to flooding of a large number of paddy fields and villages including Khekman, Moijing, Leishangthem, Thoubal police station complex, Wangjing and surrounding places in the district.

The river banks of Thoubal river at Khekman also caved in leading to the submersion of 50 houses while at Atongkhong a 300 feet stretch of the river bank breached.

The Ngangou Loukon was completely inundated when the banks of Thoubal river sunk at Lairakhong Haoreibi Mayai Leikai, Chandrakhong.

IFCD officials have rushed to the district and affected persons were being evacuated to safer places, they said.

Several parts of the district like Angtha, Poirou paddy field area, Thoubal Nungnangkhong and Thoubal Kshetri Leikai of the district were also submerged due to flooding by River Thoubal, which was flowing above the danger mark, the sources said.

A report from the district said parts of Heirok and Wangjing areas were also submerged due to overflowing by rivers Heirok and Wangjing.

CHANDEL: The flood scenario at some villages of Chandel continues to remain grim, reports our correspondent.

Chandel DC, Moses Chalai deputed the SDO, L Darsinso to assess the situation at Island village which was ravaged by flood yesterday.

The officer noted that the flood had affected 44 houses out which 7 houses have been carried away by the flood water.

The flood has also caused havoc at Tuishimi village.

About 25 homestead of the village have been damaged by the flood and the road which passes through the village and connects Pallel Thagwarigna and Kangshang was substantially damaged.

At Thrimungkung village, 11 houses have been damaged by the flood.

Earlier in the day at.8.57 am, DIG (LO-1I) V Zathang rushed to the affected areas to get a first hand account of the situation.

He was accompanied by Pallel Police outpost OC, Doren Singh.

The'team visited Island village, Tuishimi and Theimungkung village in Chandel and Pallel Maning Leikai under Thoubal district.

They also inspected the Sekmai bridge.

The water level at this river has touched the 20 feet mark.

IE & IW: In Imphal East district, Napet Palli and Telou paddy fields were flooded by Imphal river, which was flowing at the danger level following incessant rains.

In view of the increasing water level in the major river, the Police Department has alerted the para military organizations; Assam Rifles, BSF and BSF and all the district police and MR personnel to be ready for rescue and relief work at a short notice.

River Nambul also flowing through the two areas was flowing above the danger level, the sources added.

An official report said some villages at Mayang Imphal area in Imphal West district were submerged following breaches in embankments of Imphal river this afternoon at Atoukhong area, about 25 kms from here.

The report said a large number of paddy fields in the area were also inundated and added that efforts were on to block the flood water from water by erecting sand walls at the 15-feet breached embankments by local villagers.

However, there was no report of any casualty.

Flood Control deptt officials have rushed to the spot with relief materials, the sources said.

With rain lashing the valley area for the last couple of days without any signs of a respite, vast tracts of paddy fields have been ravaged by flood water, and a number of domestic dwelling houses have been flooded.

In Imphal area overflowing water from the Nambul river has inundated the Khwairamband bazar areas as well as Uripok Panchayat Maning, Laikhure-mbi, Khoisnam Leikai etc.

As at 5 pm today, the water level at the Hump Bridge (Thong Nambonbi) over the Nambul river was recorded at 783.255 metres.

The road along Wahengbam Leikai was inundated by the out flowing water from Nambul.

Though the situation of Nambul river along the Sagolband area was precarious the river banks had not breached at any point till the time of filing this report.

The water level at Imphal river was recorded at 787.1 m at 5 pm today while the water level at Iril river as at 4 pm was 788.4 m.As the flood situation took a turn from bad to worst, MoS for Power Md Allauddin inspected a number of places at Keirao AC.

The Minister distributed 2500 cement bags and 300 bamboo mats to reinforce the embankment of Iril River which flows through Keirao.

The Minister also inspected the flood situation at Kyamgei Oinam Loukon, Kyamgei Makha Leikai, Arapti Makha Leikai, Kyamgei Hindu, Khoirom Leikai, Hindu Haotabi, Hindu Thongkhong, Mamang Leikai, Hindu Khoirom Leikai, Irilbung, Keirao Bitra etc.

Around 1000 acres of paddy field have been submerged at Oinam Loukon, Canchipur Mamang, Keirao Awang Pat, Tankhapat, Kyamgei Kakokpat etc.

Embankments covering about 30 feet were breached at Nam-bol river leading to the inundation of Lourengbam, Pukhrambam, Sanjenbam, Waheng Khuman Kakyai, Ishok, Thounaojam etc.

Nambol AC MLA Dr Loken inspected the condition of Nambul, Waishel and Merakhong river which flow through his constituency.

Around 700 homesteads have been submerged at Thoubal Athokpam and Khangabok by the over flooding water from Awang River.

At Wangjing Tentha and Kairenbikhok area flood water has submerged around 40/50 acres of paddy field.

Over flooding water from Waishel Marin threatened to inundate Irom Meijrao Laxmi bazar.
