Explosion at Amutombi�s house, 5 others attacked

Imphal, February 12: With the first phase Assembly election just two days away, pre-poll violence continues to rock the State with unidentified gunmen attacking the residences of six candidates including one bomb attack since last night.

Armed assailants exploded a hand grenade at the residence of former Dy Chief Minister and Congress candidate, Kh Amutombi at Mayang Imphal Konchak at around 11.50 last night.

No one was injured in the bomb attack which damaged the southern wall of the house.

Reports said the assailants came from the Mayang Imphal Konchak side and lobbed the grenade from the southern side of the residence.

Minutes after the blast, the attackers also fired two rounds in the air.

Later Amutombi said it was an attempt on his life.

He charged that the attack was conspired by his rivals.

Fearing more attempts, he demanded five more security escorts in addition to the seven guards already protecting him.

Police recovered some splinters of the bomb and one empty case of 9 mm bullet.

Assam Rifles and BSF rushed to the area.

In another incident unidentified gunmen fired 6-7 rounds at the residence of MPP candidate in Keirao, S Lala at Langdum Makha Leikai at 12.30 this morning.

No one was injured.

Reports said the gunmen came in a Gypsy and attacked the house even as meira paibis and workers were keeping vigil.

The workers were said to have seen the vehicle coming to the area two times earlier in the day.

The gunmen fled when meira paibis started blocking the road.

Police recovered six empty cases of 9 mm ammunition from the spot of the incident.

Meanwhile, the Imphal Bench of the Gauhati High Court has asked the Government to provide adequate armed guards to Lala.

The order followed a petition.

The candidate's house was attacked again tonight.

Party workers and meira paibis nabbed two gunmen who allegedly fired some blank rounds near the resident of the candidate at around 8.45 tonight.

The meira paibis and election workers were keeping vigil around the residence of Lala after last night's attack.

The gunmen came in a jeep, added reports.

Some gunmen also fired around ten blank rounds near the Thiyam Konjil residence of MSCP candidate in Keirao, Thongam Tony at 12.30 early this morning.

The residences of Congress candidate L Jayentakumar and FPM candidate Laisom Ibomcha in Keisamthong Assembly Constituency came under attack simultaneously at around 2 pm today.

Two gunmen came on a red colour Kinetic Honda and fired two rounds at Jayentakumar's Pishumthong residence.

No one was injured.

The candidate and his escorts were inside the house when the attack took place.

Ibomcha's residence at Laisom Leikai was also attacked by two gunmen who fled towards Mandap Leirak road after the attack.

No one was injured.

A similar attack was carried out at the residence of Sorokhaibam Geetchandra, BJP candidate in Wangjing Tentha, at around 2 this morning.

There is no report of any injury.

Three workers of Samata candidate in Andro Assembly Constituency Sahid Ahmed were assaulted by unidentified gunmen at Yairipok Poirou Khongjil at around 9.30 last night.
