Five gunned down, seven nabbed

Imphal, June 07: In unrelated incidents, five persons, including activists of outlawed organisations, have either been shot dead or found killed in different places of the State even as security forces apprehended seven persons.

In a late evening shoot-out between a combined team of Imphal East district police commandos and personnel of 32 Assam Rifles three persons suspected to be armed activists were gunned down at Lairenpat, under Irilbung police station, of Imphal East district.

The encounter reportedly took place at around 8 pm today.

According to police sources, the security team recovered one carbine and two 9 mm pistol from the deceased trio.

The shoot-out reportedly ensued when a Maruti Van sped away on being signalled to stop by the combined team who were on frisking duty at near Ucheckon approach road.

After driving for a few distance some occupants of the vehicle fired at the security team but consequently got killed in retaliatory action, the sources claimed.

Another person, suspected to have been abducted has been rescued by the combined team.

Bodies of the deceased three had been deposited at RIMS morgue.

In the other incident, a person suspected to be UNLF cadre has been gunned down by troops of the 21 Assam Rifles at Irengband Sabal Leikai while CRPF personnel apprehended three UG cadres and police commandos netted four activists of armed outfits.

Identifying the UNLF suspect as P Raju of Charangpat, a release by the PRO IGAR (S) informed that based on specific information, the AR troops launched an operation in the early hours today and came under fire from a fleeing person who got killed in retaliatory firing at around 2.30 am.

One 9 mm pistol with a magazine and nine live rounds and an empty case had been recovered from the slain individual whose body has been handed over to kakching police station.

In yet another incident, a man was found shot dead by unidentified gunmen near Tejpur Mamang Moramba Loukon under Waikhong Police Station in the intervening night of yesterday and today.

Along with identification of the victim as Haobijam Saratchandra (36) of Keibul Chingmei, the police have handed over the body to his family members after post-mortem today.

Saratchandra was reportedly picked up by some armed persons few days back.

On the otherhand, troops of 8th Bn CRPF arrested three underground cadres of different outfits during the course of operations launched in the general area of Nambol and Lamdan Khulen yesterday.

According to the release issued by the Commandant 8 Bn CRPF, the trio have been identified as KYKL's L Bung Sobass (18) s/o Norendra Singh of Maibam Chingmang, PLA's Wahengbam Bishorjit Singh (35) s/o (L) W Nongyaitombi Singh of Nambol Khathong and NSCN-K's P John (45) s/o Poujanglin of Dimjanglong village.

The three have been handed over to Nambol PS and Loktak PS respectively, the release added.

Meanwhile, two KYKL activists have been arrested by Imphal West police commandos from Chalou and Langthabal Lep Mayai Leikai yesterday.

The individual nabbed from Chalou at around 4.30 pm has been identified as Haorungbam Sunil Meitei (47) s/o (L) H Naba Singh of Lousangkhong but staying at Chalou Mayai Leikai.

Sunil was working under the command of Santamacha of the KYKL organisation and assigned to recruit new cadres, a release by the Sr SP (IW) L Kailun said.

identifying the other individual as S/S Cpl Nongmaithem Budhichandra alias Chinglen (43) s/o (L) N Achou of Langthabal Lep Mayai Leikai, the SP informed of Chinglen disclosing that he joined the KYKL in october 2005 through one Loyumba and worked under the recruiter in extorting money from the general public.

Chinglen was arrested at around 10.30 pm.

Two underground activists were also apprehended by a team of Imphal East district police commandos in the past 48 hours.

A statement issued by the SP (IE) Th Radheshyam Singh informed that on June 6 at around 10.30 am one PREPAK cadre identified as Takhellambam Guneshwor Singh alias Inao (39) s/o T Bubhon of Chingmeirong Mamang Leikai was arrested from Lamlong Keithel.

Guneshwor is informed to have joined the PREPAK organisation in January this year through one Tiger of the armed outfit.

The second individual apprehended today at around 7.30 am from lamlong area is said to a UNLF cadre namely Ngangom Amarjit alias Ngathokpa alias Nono Singh (20) s/o Ng Bogen Singh of Khurai Lairikyengbam Makha Leikai.

Amarjit joined UNLF in January, 2004 through one Boy of Khurai and underwent training at Sajik Tampak, the SP's statement added.
