State level Gaan Ngai celebration organised at Tarung Village, Imphal West on January 25 2013
Chief Minister O.Ibobi Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam were the chief guest and president of the celebration organised at Tarung Village .
Gaan-Ngai the biggest festival of Zeliangrong is celebrated for about 5 days starting from January 25th 2013. It is celebrated with cultural gusto and religious fervour.
Gaan Ngai is a post harvest festival. At this time the granaries are full, the landscape is dry, the whole village is free from all agricultural works, people turn to celebration, festivity and worship of God and honouring of the dead. Gaan-Ngai is dynamic in that it is not centred on the living only but the dead too are given due honour in the form of ritual farewell. Extracting of Sacred Fire, honoing(an invocation to God) and offering of holy wine to God and deities besides cultural extraganza dance, musical recital and folk songs are inseparable parts of Gaan-Ngai.
