In remembrance of H Manglemba Meetei opening the medal account for hosts Manipur with a gold in fencing event of the 5th National Games on this day in 1999, Manipur Fencing Association today celebrated Fencing Day.
The celebration was held at Khuman Lampak SAG Hall with Governor Dr SS Sidhu and Rajya Sabha MP Rishang Keishing as the chief guest and president respectively.
Heaping praises upon Manglemba, who was also present on the occasion, for the bright start that lifted the State contingent�s morale and pipped other competitors to wrest the overall championship title, the chief guest said fencing is a modern game resting on simple but strong values like self control, discipline, will-power, strategy, elegance, sportsmanship and presence of mind.
Acknowledging of the �thrilling� sport event gaining fast popularity in the country, including Manipur, he said people of the State are legitimately proud of the young State sports-persons for their grit, adaptability and perseverance in various games and sports disciplines.
Expressing strong elation on Manipur emerging champion team of recently held 15th Senior National Fencing Championship at Nasik and exuding confidence of the State fencers bringing more laurels in future competitions, the Governor also donated Rs 10,000 to Manipur Fencing Association.
In his address to the gathering that consisted of a huge audience of parents and guardians of the fencers, Rishang Keishing pledged financial support from his MP fund in purchasing cycling, fencing and archery equipment besides assisting construction of two handball courts.
