Imphal, Aug 25:
Like every year, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) will observe the 41st Hunger Marchers' Day on August 27 in remembrance of all those who sacrificed their lives during the August 27, 1965 agitation against artificial scarcity of rice in Manipur.
The main observance function would be held at Pishum Chingamacha where the memorial of the martyrs stand.
Apart from three student activists namely, Oinam Nabakumar, Laishram Chaobhan and Nongmeikapam Pramodini, Waikhom Nilamani who worked as a driver in the All India Radio was killed in the police firing apart from injuring several others during the agitation.
Over and above, offering floral tributes and paying homage to the martyrs, a public meeting would also be held to mark the occasion.
Informing this during a press conference at the office of AMSU headquarters, AMSU secretary MS Heliem appealed to all the people, Meira paibis, student bodies and representatives of civil societies to come and participate in the observance function.
He also further appealed to all concerned not to call any bandh or general strike on the said date.
Speaking on other issues, Heliem said Naga Students' Federation (NSF) and All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) should stop its campaign of introducing text books prescribed by Nagaland Board in the schools located in the hill districts of Manipur immediately.
Otherwise, the matter would be brought up at level of North East Students' Organisation (NESO) apart from taking up a definite stand by AMSU to restrain NSF and ANSAM from continuing their campaign.
