Imphal, January 31 2010: Mystery shrouded Mongshangei Maning Leikai area with the sudden landing of an icy substance from the open sky today.

The bluish icy mass, weighing around 5 kg, fell on the tin-roofed kitchen of one Sougrakpam Jugeshwar of the locality with a sudden bang.

"We heard a loud bashing sound on the roof of our extension kitchen at around 2:15 pm.

Upon checking what was going on, we found the bluish icy substance on the floor", said Jugeshwar's son Rajiv.

The unknown mass created a huge hole in the roof of the kitchen with its forceful landing.

With the news of falling of an alien object spreaded in the locality, people thronged to the house to have a glimpse of the object.

By listening to the descriptions given by the onlookers, MP Dr Thokchom Meinya, who is also an astronomer, opined that the mass might have been accidentally ejected from the support system of a rocket or a space craft.

While talking to The Sangai Express over the phone, the MP said that the mass must emit heat if it is a meteorite.

However, the chilled icy substance that landed at Mongsangei melted fast like a normal ice into bluish liquid on exposure to normal room temperature.

"The substance is similar to ice but we feel that some sort of strange smell or gas is emitting with its melt", said an onlooker.

When this reporter reached the spot, the mass was reduced to around 3 kg.
