Imphal, September 04 2012:
The noble scheme of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) which promised to provide free education to all children between 6 to 14 years together with the requisite infrastructure seems to have left out Wakha Model Primary School.
Here, a single room serves as the class room for classes I to V .
In addition to enduring acute shortage of desks, and benches which is compounded by leaking roof and dilapidated walls, the school has received little benefits from SSA scheme.
All these shortfalls and shocking realities were discovered in the course of a campaign undertaken by the Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK) .
Speaking to media persons today, SUK vice president Santosh Lai said Wakha Model Primary School, Imphal East has 48 students and four teachers and 13 pairs of desks and benches.

The roof of the school is leaking and the walls have become hollow in different portions.
Whereas SSA guarantees mid-day meals for each and every student every working day, students of the school have been deprived off these benefits.
Even if they were sometimes given mid-day meal after a gap of several months, their only classroom was turned into a kitchen for the school has no separate kitchen.
SUK Imphal East publicity secretary Ch Rabichandra quoting the school's Headmaster Ch Inaobabu said that the Primary School was getting 39 Kgs of rice in a month under Mid-Day Meal scheme whereas the school was entitled to get 80 Kgs of rice every month.
The relevant officer deducted 50 per cent of the allotted rice quantity.
According to the general secretary of Wakha Youth Club, students of the school were offered mid-day meal seven or eight times this year.
There was no water storage tank in the school.
When the Headmaster was enquired about it, he said that there was one plastic water storage tank but it had been hired by the local people, conveyed Santosh.
When SUK members visited the school on September 3, two teachers and 13 students were present.
The 13 students who were reading in different classes were found taught in a single room, Rabichandra added.
