THE NORTH Eastern States have been able to sustain population pressure, environmental stress with Manipur bagging the first position among others regions surveyed by Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR) Chennai chapter across 28 States.
Sikkim, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram bagged the next top slots respectively," ESI Director of IFMR Centre for Development Finance Jessica Wallack said in Chennai.
As per the study rank one depicted that Manipur is 'relatively most sustainable' State, while Punjab which ranked 28 as 'relatively least sustainable' State, she said.
Due to reasons like depletion of natural resources, air and water pollution and also due to the increase in waste generation, Tamil Nadu has got the 22nd rank, she added.
Some of the components that were considered during the study were population pressure, environmental stress, impact on human health and the environmental governance.
The ESI has 15 indicators and tracks the environment performance of 28 States and projects their ability to protect the environment in future.
The higher the score, the better the state's performance on environmental dimensions, Wallack later said.
To a query she said a team from the Centre for Development Finance has done a pilot study in 2007 on similar subject and this was the first time to officially announce the performance of each State.
In addition, the Centre for Development Finance would also release the ESI report every year, she said.
