Imphal, September 09, 2010:
Cases of abduction in the State are on the rise as two more State Government employees including a woman Chief Librarian of the State Central Library, Soram Tampakleima have been taken into custody by suspected militants.
Tampakleima of Thangmeiband in the heart of Imphal along with some of her staff members were moving on a vehicle for an official duty along Tiddim road when suspected rebels waylaid and kidnapped them at Nambol area in Bishnupur district on September 7 afternoon.
After a short while, the rebels whisked away Tampakleima and her subordinate staff Ibochou Singh after releasing her driver and a peon, sources said adding that the worried families did not officially lodge a complaint with the police.
Though the explicit motive behind their abduction is yet to be ascertained till the time of filing this report, it might be linked with a huge monetary demand slapped by an underground group, added a source.
Womenfolk and Meira paibis as well as family members of Tampakleima demonstrated at Thangmeiband on Thursday afternoon demanding safe release of the duo.
Incidentally the demonstration coincided with the inauguration of a high level seminar on " Role of Librarians, archivists and writers in preservation of National heritage " at the Centre-run Manipur University library complex here.
"We are totally at a loss for words.
After the passing away of our father in 2006, my mother (Tampakleima) has been looking after us.
We fervently request the abductors to release our mother and her staff unharmed at the earliest," said Soram Lily, eldest daughter of the chief Liberian.
The duo's abduction came barely a couple of days after militants freed three Government officials.
