Renowned novelist and short story writer of Manipur Hijam Guno has passed away around 5 pm today at his residence at Keishampat Thokchom Leikai here.
He was 85. Shri Guno had written the classic novels Laman (1968), Khudol (1968), Aroiba Poadam and Bir Tikendrajit Road.
He won Sahitya Academy Award for the latter.
He had also written a short novel Eikhoi Tada (1966), which was translated into English and published titled My Elder Brother.
He was given Dr BR Ambedkar Fellowship on the book.
He had written a book of poetry titled Tonu Laijinglembi Sheitharol.
Some of the short stories he had written, which still capture the minds of the lovers of Manipuri literature, are Phijang Marumda (1969), Khadanggee Shambru, Langjin Maangkhraba Kishi, etc.
He also translated The History of Bangla Literature into Manipuri and published as Bangla Sahityagee Itihas, for which he won the Sahitya Academy Award for Translation once again.
He was also an awardee of Jamini Guha Sunder Gold Medal.
Apart from writing, he was employed as Administrative Officer in the civil court, as OSD in the office of Yangmasho Shaiza when he was the Chief Minister of Manipur.
He was also Personal Secretary to the former Chief Minister of Manipur RK Joychandra.
