Imphal, November 09 2009:
Paddy fields which had adopted System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method is expected to produce 58 to 60 bags of paddy from an area of one sangam in Imphal East district.
N Ranjit, a farmer who adopted the method under the supervision of ICDP Rice In-charge A Ibomcha with free PAC 801 paddy seeds from the Agriculture Department said that a single seedling multiplied to produce 38 to 50 paddy plants.
He informed that harvesting of these fully grown paddy plants have begun today and estimated to reap 58 to 60 bags per sangam.
Even if one sangam produces 40 to 45 bags, Ranjit's paddy field would surpass all other paddy fields of the area in production.
ICDP Rice In-charge A Ibomcha said that SRI method had been implemented in the paddy fields of various localities of the State using PAC 801 seedlings in order to tackle this year's scanty rainfall.
It can be said that the method is successful even if one sangam produces 40 bags of paddy in Imphal East, as the district was the worst drought affected area of the State, Ibomcha added.
