Imphal, July 25:
The State Government's plan to construct a solid waste treatment plant at Lamdeng under Imphal West district is facing opposition from the local people there.
Opposing the plan of the Government, a joint action committee has been constituted and various agitation programmes drawn up.
A public meeting held today at Lamdeng Junior High School resolved that people should not accept the Government's plan to build a solid waste treatment plant at Lamdeng which they alleged will affect more than 80 acres of agricultural land.
The meeting also decided to launch various forms of agitation in case the Government persists with its plan against the wish of the people.
Convenor of the JAC Against Solid Waste Management Plant at Lamdeng Thoudam Netrajit noted that factories and plants established earlier by the State Government after acquiring vast areas of land have all failed.
Observing that the site of the proposed solid waste treatment plant is hardly 2 kms away from the human settlement area, Netrajit alleged that the local people are against dumping all the waste materials and garbage of Imphal city at Lamdeng.
Moreover, the Lamdeng people would not exchange their agricultural land with alternative agricultural fields or with monetary compensation, he asserted.
Even though the proposed solid waste treatment plant requires only about 15 acres of land, the State Government is planning to acquire more than 80 acres.
As such, the proposed plant will definitely affect agricultural fields of Lokchao, Katalok and Longak Macha, observed the JAC convenor.
Even though some people of Lamdeng were also included among the State team who visited the solid waste management plant at Shillong, this does not mean that the people of Lamdeng have approved building the proposed solid waste treatment plant at Lamdeng, he noted.
