Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, April 18: As the pre-monsoon torrential downpour that had paralysed normal life of the people slowly subsided giving way to occasional drizzling, reports of flood having left a trail of destruction and various organisations crying for relief material for the affected people have started pouring in from different parts of the State.

Nagaram Village Development Authority has appealed to the Government to take up relief works at Nagaram area where inhabitants of about 150 houses have been seriously affected by flood.

Family properties including livestock have been lost in the flood water which is 2-4 feet deep with Nagaram Block-D, Block-B, Namdulong and Fairylane being the worst hit areas, village authority chairman Ng Hungyo informed in a release.

All Kakching Khunou Meira Paibi Welfare Assn, while informing that as many as 500 residential houses and seasonal vegetables have been damaged in the hail storm that lashed the State on April 14 has drawn the attention of the authorities concerned for providing relief materials to the affected people.

Bishnupur District Congress Committee and pradhan of 9-Arong Nongmaikhong Gram Panchayat N Ibomcha Singh in separate releases have also appealed to the Government for considering the plight of the families whose houses and properties have been destroyed within their respective jurisdiction.

Union of Social Upliftment which has opened a flood relief camp at USA Lamlong Keithel for giving shelter to those local people who have been affected and render homeless in the flood have urged the Govt for extending relief materials to the flood victims.

On the other hand, extending its humanitarian service, Epathoukok, a centre for arts and culture at Uripok Noremthong have helped the flood affected people of Achom Leikai and Naoremthong in getting relief aid from Imphal West District DC.

However, it took serious note of depriving relief aids to the flood victims of Uripok area, though the same have been reportedly handed through the local MLA and the councillor and drew the immediate attention of the authorities concerned towards this matter.

Volunteers of Young Pillars' Union, Sagolband Meino Le-irak along with Ex-MLA of Sagolband A/C Dr Kh Loken Singh, Ex-MLA of Keishamthong A/C L Jayantakumar Singh and Keishamthong A/C MLA L Ibomcha today distributed rice and candles to the flood affected people of the constituency, informed a release.

Similarly volunteers of Young Body Builders' Gym, Pisumthong Oinam Leikai led by Asem Sanayaima and Keinatombi of Oinam Leikai Lairembi Maning also distribution of rice and other essential food items to the flood victims of the area.

Meanwhile, reports of inundation of low lying areas including cultivable fields at Ishok due to overflowing of water from Malom Merakhong and at Khangabok Part-III due to overflown water from Arong river have also been received even as Student Federation of India, Manipur State Committee has blamed the Govt for present flood situation in Greater Imphal area.

Expressing deep concern over the large scale destruction of houses and agricultural land at Nungsai village (Leimatak) under Nungba Sub Division during the recent torrential rain that lashed the State, Nungshai/Tubung Village Authority has appealed to the authorities concerned to look into the matter and provide relief measures to the affected villagers.

Meanwhile, pradhan of Turel Ahanbi Atoukhong Gram Panchayat and Konthoujam Local council CPI have claimed that heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstorm during the last few days has damaged several houses and paddy fields.

Relief material to be distributed at Bpr today: As part of its ongoing programme to extend relief materials to flood affected people of the state Food and Civil Supplies (FCS) Dept has been distributing rice and kerosine oil at subsidised rates in Imphal West and East district areas while for Bishnupur district the distribution will start tomorrow.

Talking to news-persons today evening FCS Minister Ph Parijat while stating that relief material distribution had begun from yesterday informed that rice and kerosine are being sold at Rs 6.50 per kg and Rs 10 per litre respectively.

Through engagement of ten trucks as mobile shops Porom-pat, Porompat circle and Lamlai circle of Imphal East district were covered yesterday while in Imphal West the essential items were sold at Uripok, Sagolband, Keisamthong and Konthoujam areas, said the Minister.

Giving a detailed account Parijat said out of 540 quintal rice for the two district the Imphal East share totalled 250 kgs while for Imphal West it was 290 kgs while kerosine oil quantity were 24,000 litres each.

maintaining that the quantities if relief materials were supplied based on information provided by respective District Deputy Commissioners, the FCS Minister asserted that 100 quintal of rice were also provided today at Sagolband, Konthoujam, Kwakeithel, Khagempali, Haobam Marak and at Singjamei Waikhom Leikai.

Acknowledging reports of Bishnupur district people reeling under the flood menace he assured that FCS mobile shops would reach the district tomorrow to mitigate the suffering of the people to some extent.

After perusing through reports of DCs on exact number of displaced persons taking shelter at relief camps flood relief materials would be supplied free of cost to them, he stated.

The Minister further added that out of total kerosine quota entitled to Manipur, the Centre has reduced the quantity by 1,06000 litres.

Meanwhile, volunteers of Manipur Forward Youth Front today distributed relief materials to the flood affected victims of Chana and Nongda.

In a statement, MAFYF president Sapamcha Kanglei-pal charged the State Govt of remaining indifferent to the woes of the flood affected people and further said that relief materials distributed by the Govt have become only for the well to do families as they are being sold and not freely distributed to the poor masses.

He also lamented that no relief measures from the Govt have arrived in the Chana and Nongda areas inspite of the flood creating havoc for the past two/three days.

A team of Manipuri Student Federation volunteers led by its president Gourachandra today reportedly donated 4 bags of rice and 1 bag of potato to the flood relief camp organised jointly with Kwakeithel Akham Leikai Youth Club, Local Youth Development Assn .
