The campaign on Prevention of Child Abuse organised by the Forum for Indigenous Prevention and Action Manipur since November 19 concluded today at Hotel Imphal.
The main feature of the concluding function was distribution of prizes to the winners of poster competition for children between 11 and 15 years, essay competition for children and essay competition for parents organised under the campaign.
The function was attended by editor of the Imphal Free Press Pradip Phanjoubam, Centre for Study of Developing Society Associate Professor Bimol Akoijam, writer Arambam Memchoubi, ICDS programme officer M Ranjana and human rights activist Phulindro Konsam as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Bimol Akoijam said that child abuse may be in the form of emotional abuse, physical or sexual abuse.
To comprehend the word abuse, it is crucial to study the correlation between the values being imparted to children and the individualities of each children, he said.
Despite several laws and conventions to check child abuse, many children in Manipur are being abused in one form or another as a consequence of the prevailing conflict situation, observed Phulindro.
Asserting that children are facing an unfair degree of pressure from their parents, M Ranjana observed that parents always try to force their wish into their children without considering the aptitude of children.
Such children, when separated from their parents, often go astray, she noted.
Memchoubi call ed upon all parents to introspect into the increasing number of youths taking to drugs.
