Giving due recognition and respect to one of the greatest freedom fighter of Manipur, the foundation stone for constructing the memorial of Major Chongtham Mia, who was the Commander of the Manipuri forces at Khongjom War and sacrificed his life for the motherland, was laid his birth place, Lalambung Chongtham Leikai today.
Noted Manipuri writer MK Binodini Devi presided over the function organised under the aegis of Major Chongtha Mia Memorial Committee, Singjamei Chongtham Leikai.
Speaking at the occasion, Binodini said that she was happy that people have started recognising one of the greatest Manipuri freedom fighters.
She said although history has committed a blunder in not giving due recognition to Chongtham Mia, it is never late to rectify the past mistake.
We should not feel shame in admitting the historical mistake, she observed.
She further appealed to all concerned for working towards taking up neccessary steps to rectify these mistake so that an important historical figure like Chongtham Mia could be given his due right and place in the annal of history of Manipur and its freedom struggle.
Padmashree Pandit N Khelchandra Singh who attended the function as chief guest, Prof N Joykumar Singh of Manipur University and active member of the Memorial Committee Chongtham Samarendra Singh were among those who spoke on Khongjom War and the contributions of Major Chongtham Mia.
