Guwahati, December 26 2009:
S Tel, a telecom firm, will invest nearly Rs 350 crore in the North-east to provide mobile service.
The company will launch its service in the first quarter of next year.
"We have identified six telecom circles in the country in which we are investing to the tune of Rs 2,100 crore and our investment in the North-east will be around Rs 350 crore," P Swaminathan, Director of S Tel told this correspondent from Patna today.
He further said that this region is a potential area for the telecom companies.
"According to our survey about 80 per cent of the total population is still uncovered by the telecom service in the region and, therefore we are expecting a good volume of business," he added.
To substantiate his claim, Swaminathan informed that tele- density in the North-east is only 21 per cent which indicates that this region still offers a big market for the telecom players.
"S Tel is known for quality service and we will be harnessing the unexplored market.
Assam is our main focused area and gradually we will expand our operation in other parts of the North-east," he said, adding that the new service will also provide opportunities to the unemployed local youths.
