Even as the exact figure of Sangai population in Keibul Lamjao National park has not been disclosed by the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, it is reported that Sangai population in the park remains more or less stable as compared to previous years.
Talking to The Sangai Express, a high-ranking official of the Department of Forest and Environment informed that after the head count of Sangai undertaken in April this year with officials of the Wildlife Institute of India, the population density of the endangered deer was found to be stable.
This was disclosed by the representatives of the Wildlife Institute of India during a review meeting of the Sangai head count with Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, S Singsit and other officials of the Department.
On the previous head count of Sangai undertaken by the State Forest Dept in Keibul Lamjao National Park, the number of the brow antlered deer was found to be around 180.The ongoing survey in the Keibul Lamjao National park being undertaken by the Wildlife Institute of India also includes study of genetic behaviour of Sangai and its habitat analysis besides counting its numbers.
The review meeting also took serious note of the survey report that water in and around Keibul Lamjao has been highly polluted.
A study of the socio-economic life of the people settling around the park has also been encompassed into the survey work being undertaken by the Wildlife Institute of India, says a report.
