Imphal, August 18: Residents of Phunan Maring Khunjao and Khunou, Keirao Kabui and Uram Chiru villages of Imphal East district staged a protest demonstration under the banner of North Maring Uparup Organisation to oppose candidature of a woman for the Bamon Kampu Zilla Parishad member election.

The woman in question is informed to have married outside her community (non-tribal) to which the villagers resented on the ground that she would be contesting under the scheduled tribe quota system.

The villagers demanding cancellation of the woman aspirant's nomination decried procedural lapses on the part of the Returning Officer concerned.

The protestors on their way to apprise the matter to the Chief Minister were stopped at near the Palace Compound by a team of Imphal East district police before some individuals representing the tribal communities were allowed to submit a memorandum to the CM.
